By Zoila Palma: Former Prime Minister Dean Barrow has expressed concern about the state of governance under Prime Minister John Briceño, arguing that the deepening divisions within the current administration raise serious questions about accountability and whether established safeguards are functioning as intended.
Barrow said the situation goes beyond ordinary political disagreements, pointing to what he described as significant fractures within the Cabinet and concerns about ministers failing to uphold their responsibilities. He acknowledged that similar problems existed during his own tenure, cautioning against pretending that previous administrations were free from shortcomings.
Barrow said, “But the guardrails aren’t working.” He added that he did not want to appear hypocritical, acknowledging that some members of his own Cabinet had also failed to consistently follow the rules or act with complete honesty.
Barrow believes the current situation represents a particularly troubling period for Belize. “Again the degree that we’re witnessing now I repeat has not been seen for a long, long time,” he said. He went on to describe the situation as a possible new low, stating, “Maybe good governance was always an illusion and a chimera, but certainly this seems to represent a new low.”
Barrow said he hopes Briceño will succeed in getting his Cabinet back on track.
