By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Cabinet’s rejection of the Speednet acquisition has not taken the unions off the streets. The National Trade Union Congress of Belize has confirmed that its planned demonstration for Tuesday remains on schedule, set for two locations at once: the Sir Edney Cain Building in Belmopan and the BTL headquarters in Belize City, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The NTUCB says any change in venue will be communicated over the weekend.
The confirmation is itself the news. The demonstration was originally announced as pressure on the decision, timed to the Cabinet meeting where ministers were expected to take their final position on the proposed BTL acquisition of SMART/Speednet. That position arrived early: on Wednesday, Cabinet announced it does not support the acquisition, effectively killing the deal five days before the planned march.
The unions, evidently, are marching anyway.
The NTUCB’s announcement does not detail the demonstration’s aims now that the deal is off the table, and the possibilities read several ways: a show of appreciation and strength after a campaign that got results, a signal of vigilance to ensure the rejection holds, or a platform for concerns that go beyond the single transaction. The choice of BTL headquarters as a second venue, alongside Cabinet’s doorstep, suggests the unions’ message is addressed to the company as much as the government.
What is certain is the sequence that got here. The NTUCB rejected the consolidation, called the nation to wear black on Friday, and set Tuesday’s demonstration for the decision day. Cabinet moved first, and now the streets get their say regardless.
Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Belmopan and Belize City. Whatever the message turns out to be, Breaking Belize News will be covering both locations.
