By Breaking Belize News Staff: Thirty-year-old Josue Danilo Villatoro Amador will serve less than three more years in prison for the shooting death of police officer Alfonso Guy, after entering into a plea bargain and pleading guilty to manslaughter.
Amador appeared on Thursday before Justice Candace Nanton, who handed down a sentence of three years and two months, reduced from a 15-year starting point. Deductions were granted for his guilty plea, mitigating factors, and the nearly five years he spent on remand. His sentence was ordered to take effect from June 2, 2025, when he entered the plea deal, leaving him with just two years and 11 months left to serve.
The incident occurred on January 11, 2019, in San Pedro. Amador and Cpl. Guy had been drinking when Guy reportedly handed his service weapon to Amador for safekeeping. Later, while handling the firearm, Amador pulled the trigger, fatally shooting Guy in the chest.
Police officers responding to the scene found Guy dead on the floor of his home. Amador, who had fled but later cooperated with investigators, was initially indicted for murder before the charge was reduced.
Amador had called two character witnesses in his defense during mitigation.
