By Zoila Palma: A tribute concert for cultural icon Aurelio Martinez will be held in Dangriga tonight.
Aurelio is recognized as a leading cultural ambassador for the Garifuna people and was widely recognized for his significant contributions as a singer, percussionist, guitarist, and performer.
Aurelio’s impact on Garifuna culture and music is profound.
He founded the internationally acclaimed group Lita Ariran and produced an extensive discography that includes notable albums such as “Darandi” (2017), “Lándini” (2014), “Laru Beya” (2011), and “Garifuna Soul” (2024).
His 1995 album “Songs of the Garifuna: Lita Ariran” as well as successful collaborations like “Wátina” (2007) with the late Andy Palacio and “Paranda” (1999) have left an enduring legacy that has inspired countless musicians and delighted audiences globally.
The concert tonight will be held at the BTL park and includes performances by the general Supa G, Reckless, Hubee, Harlem Youth, Nuru and the GHB among many others.
This tribute will also include performances by Newani Martinez, the talented son of Aurelio.
The concert commences at 6pm.
