By Aaron Humes, Dangriga: A new fire station on the outskirts of the Culture Capital was gifted by the U.S. Southern Command to the National Fire Service this morning.

Located on Gadsby Ramos Street next to Delille Academy, the new Fire Station is located on a parcel of land first designated for the purpose 24 years ago as part of a planned expansion of Dangriga’s commercial zone. It cost $1.46 million to build.

U.S. Ambassador Michelle Kwan noted the work that firefighters do and their reputation for heroism and saluted this expansion of Belize’s emergency response to Dangriga’s 12 thousand residents.

The U.S. will also help build a new station in the San Ignacio area, Ambassador Kwan announced.

Minister of Sustainable Development Orlando Habet called the station a testament to collective effort and the partnership between America and Belize, and a direct response aiming to improve service for Dangrigans – after a year with a 60 percent increase in fire calls nationwide with more than 800, as well as a bustling emergency medical service and search and rescue component, which he said the Government hopes to enshrine in law.

The Minister noted that a new intake of firefighters/emergency personnel is being trained, numbering 70, and expected to pass out by June.
