By Breaking Belize News Staff: A man who previously walked free from a murder charge is back behind bars after being sentenced to one year imprisonment for a machete attack on a fellow Hattieville resident.
The convicted man is Albert Emmanuel Jones Sr., 53, a fisherman and labourer of Mile 15, Hattieville Village. Jones Sr. pleaded guilty to the charge of wounding after he chopped a 48-year-old man on the shoulder during an early-morning incident.
At his arraignment, the prosecution withdrew an additional charge of aggravated assault, which Magistrate Mannon Dennison struck out for duplicity. In addressing the court, Jones Sr. admitted to the attack, telling the magistrate, “I chop up deh man for nothing… we have been having old misunderstanding for quite a while now, but I never intended to kill him.”
Jones appealed for leniency, asking for a fine or a suspended sentence, saying he did not want to go to prison and that he had “lost it” in the moment due to stress and ongoing conflicts. He claimed a quarrel with his wife and a comment made by the other man triggered the incident, insisting it was never his intention to cause serious harm.
However, Magistrate Dennison rejected the plea, noting that Jones Sr., as an older member of the community, should serve as an example to younger people. The court also took into account his prior criminal record, which includes multiple convictions for violent offenses, including two woundings and a harm. Jones Sr. was sentenced to one year imprisonment, effective January 21, 2026.
Police said that on Saturday, January 17, 2026, around 9:00 a.m., officers responded to reports of an injured man near the Old Hattieville Boom area by a bus shed housing a taco stand. There, police found the victim bleeding from a cut wound to his left shoulder.
He told investigators that about 8:30 a.m., while sitting under the bus shed eating tacos, he was attacked from behind by Jones Sr., whom he had known for about a year and regularly saw in the area. Jones allegedly chopped him with a machete, causing him to bleed profusely.
The man said he was attacked without provocation and was assisted by a third man, who intervened and took the machete away from Jones Sr.
