Cynthia McLeod, a prominent Surinamese writer, has received an honorary doctorate from the Anton de Kom University of Suriname. This recognition highlights her significant contribution to literature, especially through her ability to seamlessly blend historical fact and fiction in her novels.

In her oration at the doctorate ceremony, McLeod addressed the question: ‘Historiography in Relation to the Historical Novel: Can a Historical Novel Influence Historiography?’ Her oration gave rise to a fascinating discussion about the role of literature in our perception of history. Known for her extensive research and penetrating stories that provide insight into Suriname’s colonial past, McLeod has offered, through her works, a unique perspective on the way in which to understand and appreciate our history.

Cynthia McLeod, born in Paramaribo on October 4, 1936, has established herself prominently within Surinamese literature with books such as ‘Hoe duur was de suiker?’ [The Cost of Sugar] and ‘De vrije negerin Elisabeth’ [The Free Negress Elisabeth]. Rooted in Surinamese history, her works not only provide readers with compelling stories, but also draw attention to the complex history of Suriname and its impact upon its people. McLeod’s contribution to the literature and historiography of Suriname has not only an educational but also a healing function, as her prose brings voices from the past to life.

The honorary doctorate recognizes McLeod’s literary talent, but also shines light upon the importance of good historical novels and the manner in which they may serve as a tool for education and for understanding our shared history. McLeod’s work remains invaluable, and this award confirms the lasting influence of her writing on the Surinamese literary and historiographical landscape.
