By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize cyclind world is alive with excitement this Sunday morning, March 23, 2025, as the 100-mile ‘Rumble in the Tropics’ cycling race is well underway. Riders from all categories—elite, masters, and juniors—took off at 8:00 am from the Esso XaiBel Service Station on the Hummingbird Highway, embarking on a challenging course designed to test their endurance, strategy, and skill.

The scenic yet demanding route, which climbs to an elevation of 2,773 feet above sea level, is the perfect proving ground for Belize’s top cyclists. After navigating the Hummingbird Highway’s tough climbs on the ‘Stann Creek Valley Road’, the competitors will reach Belize City for the final showdown—three laps on Central American Boulevard.

With over $15,000 in cash prizes up for grabs, the stakes are incredibly high. Not only does the race reward the winners with lucrative prizes, but it also offers a golden opportunity for participants to prepare for the prestigious 144-mile Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic.

Dating back to 1928, the Cross Country Classic is Belize’s most iconic and grueling cycling race, practically traversing the entire width of the country from Belize City to San Ignacio and back. The ‘Rumble in the Tropics’ serves as a crucial test race for cyclist before tackling the historical Holy Saturday event.

The ‘Rumble’ has garnered tremendous community support, thanks to sponsors like Belize Electricity Limited, Belize City Council, Powerade, Crystal, and M&M Engineering.

As the race unfolds, Belizean cycling enthusiasts are glued to every turn of the wheels, cheering for their favorite athletes.
