Cycling Federation of Belize says three riders still hospitalized after Prep Race crash

By Aaron Humes: A trio of top cyclists participating in an official Prep Race remain hospitalized under observation tonight at the La Loma Luz Hospital in Cayo, after a “serious crash occurred during the first lap, involving several top riders,” according to the Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB).

Veteran Roque Matus and young stars Joslyn Chavarria Jr. and Christopher Waight are the riders still hospitalized. Waight and another injured rider, former Cross Country champion Oscar Quiroz, require an MRI to assess the severity of their fractures.

A total of six athletes – Quiroz, Waight, Matus, Chavarria, Leon Leslie and Wendell Williams – “were hospitalized with severe road rashes, bruises, and fractures,” the Federation confirmed. Leslie and Williams have since been released.

The Federation requests prayers for the athletes’ positive results, quick healing, and speedy recovery ahead of the teeth of the cycling season, with the Valentine’s, Belmopan and other prep races to come ahead of the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic in April.
