By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On Friday, January 3, 2025, during the ‘A Nite of Cycling Legends’ event, the Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB) took the opportunity to recognize the exceptional achievements of Derrick Chavarria and Kaya Cattouse, naming them the Men’s and Women’s Cyclists of the Year 2024, respectively.
“We took the opportunity to acknowledge and highlight our Male and Female Cyclist of the Year 2024, Derrick Chavarria and Kaya Cattouse! Congrats to both.” the CFB said in a social media post congratulating the cyclists.
Organized by Bike Chat and Oswald Bowman, ‘A Nite of Cycling Legends’ was a remarkable event held at the Princess Hotel Queens Room in Belize City. The evening was dedicated to honouring past cycling legends and celebrating the rich history of the sport in Belize.
The event was a nostalgic journey, reminiscing on the achievements of past legends who have left an indelible mark on the sport. The CFB expressed gratitude to the Bowman Family for organizing and presenting the First Night of Living Legends, an event that honored champions and catalyst cyclists from 1928 to 1989. The evening also recognized the contributions of trailblazing women, past administrators, and dedicated volunteers.

John Miguel’s illustrious career includes winning the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic four times: in 1960 (tying with Duncan Vernon), 1964, 1965, and 1968. Kenrick Halliday matched this remarkable feat by securing victories in 1974, 1975, 1977, and 1978. Goldburn Ferguson was the only cyclist to have won the prestigious race on both the Western and Northern Highways, claiming victories in 1941 and 1942. Anthony Hutchinson triumphed in the race twice, in 1972 and 1973, and Joslyn Chavarria, Sr. delivered a notable performance in 1981, finishing second to the late Alpheus Williams.
This event not only celebrated the achievements of these and other cycling legends but also served as a unifying moment for the cycling community, reflecting on the rich history and contributions by the sport of cycling in Belize.
