By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB) announced new initiatives to support youth cycling development, including the acquisition of eight bicycles, five of which are pending delivery, specifically designated for young women cyclists looking to advance their skills.
According to the CFB press release on Friday, April 11, the initiative is part of a broader effort to make cycling more accessible for young athletes.
“We remain committed to fostering the development of young cyclists by providing them with the necessary tools and opportunities to grow in the sport,” the Federation stated.
The announcement comes just ahead of an impressive performance by Belize’s Junior and Youth riders in the 34th Annual Puma Women’s Cross Country Cycling Classic on Sunday. The grueling 73-mile race from San Ignacio to Digi Park in Belize City saw three young Belizean cyclists claim spots in the top six, highlighting the growing talent among the nation’s youth.
Junior Cross Country Champion Irene Baki delivered a remarkable race, finishing in second place, further solidifying her status as one of Belize’s rising stars in the sport. Meanwhile, Youth Cross Country Champion Lliani Choto battled through to finish fourth, and Junior cyclist Chelsy Gillett secured sixth place, demonstrating the strength of Belize’s young cycling talent.
Alongside the bicycle program, the CFB said it has introduced a youth summer cycling initiative, aimed at encouraging young girls to take up the sport in a structured and supportive environment. The Federation said the program aligns with the vision of the new Minister of Sports, Anthony Mahler, to incorporate cycling into extracurricular activities at primary and secondary schools.
The Federation also highlighted its racing strategy for Junior and Youth Women cyclists, ensuring financial assistance and competitive opportunities.
“We have seen a slow but steady increase in women participation, with 18 registered women cyclists to date – 9 in the Junior/Youth category and 9 in the U23/Elite/masters division,” the CFB said.
The Federation reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring structured development for young riders while following UCI policies to prioritize athlete welfare and growth.
