By Aaron Humes: At the Santa Elena border in the Corozal District, Customs and Excise Department officers discovered a significant cache of high-powered weapons and ammunition during a routine inspection of loose cargo being transported from the United States.
Inspectors, anticipating personal belongings such as a baby stroller and other basic items, conducted a thorough search in the presence of the sender and receiver—a mother and her son. The mother, a public officer in Belize, and her son, a U.S. Army veteran, were caught off guard when inspectors uncovered a stash of ammunition hidden in one of the boxes.
The situation escalated when Customs authorities called in local police to assist. A subsequent examination of the cargo uncovered not only a large quantity of high-caliber ammunition but also three firearms and various extended magazines. The total haul included hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
All items seized in the operation were handed over to the police for further investigation.
