Customs employee remanded after allegedly shooting at three men after they were just released from police custody

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man employed with the Customs Department has been remanded to prison after being accused of opening fire on three men shortly after they were released from police custody.

Khalil Hauze appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm against the three men.

Hauze pleaded not guilty, but because the allegations involve the use of a firearm, bail was denied at the Magistrate’s Court level. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until October 13, 2026.

The charges stem from an incident on August 1. Police say the three men had been released from the Precinct 2 Police Station cellblock at about 4:20 p.m. and were walking along Iguana Street when they encountered Hauze.

According to the complainants, Hauze called out to one of them as the three men passed a residence. Moments later, they allegedly heard what sounded like a gunshot.

One of the man told police that when he looked back, he saw Hauze standing in a yard holding what appeared to be a firearm and pointing it in their direction. The men reportedly heard two more shots, with one of the men claiming he saw flashes coming from the object Hauze was holding.

The three men ran through Iguana Street and onto Curassow Street, where they encountered police officers who escorted them to the Precinct 1 Police Station. None of the men was injured.

Investigators processed the area where the alleged shooting occurred, but no expended shells were reportedly recovered. Police also reviewed footage and information from the department’s Camera Room as part of the investigation.

Hauze was subsequently sought by police, detained over the weekend and charged with the three firearm-related offences.
