Cuban film “La mujer salvaje” wins awards at the Ceará Film Festival

OnCuba News reports that Cuban film La mujer salvaje [The Wild Woman], directed by Alan González, recently won three awards (Best Film, Best Lead Performance, and Best Sound) at the Ceará Film Festival in Brazil.

The Cuban film La mujer salvajeby new director Alan González, which premiered last September at the Toronto International Film Festival, won three awards at the 33rd edition of the Ceará Film Festival, which took place in Brazil between November and December 1.

Cuban lead actress, Lola Amores, celebrated on her networks the triumph of the feature film in the Best Film, Best Lead Performance, and Best Sound categories.

This is the film that also won the second call for entries from the Cuban Cinema Promotion Fund (FFCC), produced by Cacha Films, a company founded and led by Claudia Calviño.

The film is a completely Cuban production, co-written between its director and Nuri Duarte. It tells the story of a mother who fights for the love of her son. Starring Amores, it marks the debut of the child actor Jean Marcos Fraga. Also participating are Isora Morales, Grisell Monzón, Yaité Ruiz, Leandro Sen, Afrodreak, Yailín Coppola, and Jorge Perrugorría.

The feature film is the debut feature of González (1987), a graduate of the University of the Arts with a degree in Audiovisual Communication and a screenwriting specialty from the International Film and TV School of San Antonio de los Baños.

Last August, when the film’s participation in the Toronto International Film Festival was announced, the director declared that he was curious to see the public’s possible reactions to Yolanda’s story and the experience of being swept away by it. “I would like La mujer salvajeshow the audience things that one sees all the time, even though sometimes one doesn’t know or doesn’t want to hear about them,” he added.

According to Latam Cinema, the Ceará Film Festival included the Cuban feature film among six films that were seen for the first time in Brazil. In addition to La mujer salvaje, Sou Amor, by André Amparo and Cris Azzi, was screened; El castigo, by Chilean director Matías Bize; the Peruvian-French feature Cielo abierto, by Felipe Esparza; the Argentine-Spanish film Alemania, by María Zanetti, and the co-production between Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands Ahora la luz cae vertical, by Efthymia Zymvragaki.

Media outlets add that this selection was made from more than 300 films that applied. According to Latam Cinema, the curatorial team highlights that the six chosen films “reflect the sum of feelings, concerns and desires of each of the directors who will show their works to a demanding public.”
