Several Dominican news outlets have reported the death of the Cuban-born artist based in the Dominican Republic Quisqueya Henríquez. She passed away on March 30, after a two-year battle with cancer. N Digital reports:

Prominent Dominican visual artist of Cuban origin, Quisqueya Henríquez, died today in Santo Domingo, at age 58, reported this afternoon by her husband, the senator for the province of Samaná, Dr. Pedro Catrain.

“With great pain I want to inform you that my dear wife Quisqueya Henríquez has passed away at 4:00 in the afternoon this Saturday in her bed at home, leaving a great void in my heart, in her family, in her friends and in the visual arts to which she dedicated her entire life,” said Catrain, indicating that the award-winning artist had been suffering from a stomach cancer for two years, which in the end, she was not able to overcome.

The artist and art professor was a graduate of the Higher Institute of Art [Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA)] of Havana, Cuba, and the Art School of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. She was the daughter of the Cuban Angélica Cruz and Dominican historian Francisco Alberto Henríquez Vásquez (Chito), both deceased. [. . .]

[. . .] With her departure at an early age, Quisqueya Henriquez leaves us the indelible mark of an avant-garde and singular artistic work that broke the canons and the traditional schemes of the visual arts, opening the way to postmodern contemporary art on the stages of the most important festivals, art venues, and museums in the Caribbean region, Latin America, and the United States.

Among Quisqueya Henríquez’s most important artistic works and stagings, the following stand out: La historia como rumor, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Buenos Aires, 2021; El campo de lo posible, Museo Fernando Defilló, Santo Domingo, 2020; Maleza, multiple bodies of work, CCESD, Santo Domingo, 2015; Alter somer twisted lines, David Castillo Gallery, Miami, Florida; among many others.

Pedro Catrain said that funeral services for Henríquez will take place at the Blandino Funeral Home on Abraham Lincoln Street in the National District; the day and time will be announced soon.
