JB (for St. Kitts & Nevis Observer) reports that the Central Bank of Cuba has now put into circulation bills featuring portraits of Mariana Grajales (2000 CUP) and Celia Sánchez (5000 CUP). Celia Sánchez had appeared on commemorative coins and special mints, but this is the first time she is featured on a general circulation banknote of such a high denomination. The bills have been circulating since April 1, 2026. Fidel Rendón Matienzo (Agencia Cubana de Noticias) offers more details about the banknotes.
The Central Bank of Cuba is set to introduce two new banknotes featuring women for the first time in the country’s history.
They are 2000 and 5000 Cuban peso notes, the equivalent to US $4 and US $10. Until now, the highest denomination until now has been the 1000 peso note.
The 2000 Cuban peso note in violet and pink tones will feature a portrait of Mariana Grajales, a patriot of Cuban independence and mother of several of the country’s heroes. The 5000 peso note in blue will depict Celia Sánchez, a guerrilla fighter who became a close collaborator of former President Fidel Castro.
