Cristo Rey lose 2-1 to Sporting Alliance in Cayo Football Association 2023 1st Division Quarterfinals, still advance to semifinals

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Cristo Rey qualified for the semifinals of the Cayo Football Association 2023-24 First Division Opening Season despite losing 2-1 to Sporting Alliance on Sunday at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio. Cristo Rey advanced on a 4-2 aggregate by virtue of winning the first quarterfinal 3-0.

Julian Maldonado scored a brace for Sporting Alliance, shaking the net in the 16th minute off a penalty kick and converting a field goal in the 63rd.

Allan Tzib found the net for Cristo Rey in the 30th minute.

“Well done team for qualifying to semifinals,” Cristo Rey FC said in a social media post.

“Will like to say thanks to all players that gave us their all and didn’t give up and thanks to all fans that have been supporting us from the beginning of our winning!!! Let’s go team !!”

In the first match on Sunday, 7-Miles blew away Regulataz 4-0 to qualify to the semifinals on an 8-3 aggregate. 7-Miles had won the first game 4-3.

On Friday, Santa Elena Royals eliminated the defending champions Flames 6-5 in a penalty shootout after finishing 4-4 on aggregate. Flames won the first leg 3-2, but Santa Elena got even by beating them 2-1 on Friday to force the penalty kicks shootout.

Western Raiders also earned a ticket to the semifinals on Friday by edging defending subchampions Bullet Tree 5-4 on aggregate. Western Raiders won the second match 2-1 to advance after the first leg finished in a 3-3 draw.
