By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man narrowly avoided jail time today after being fined $505 for possession of a crack pipe—his ninth drug-related conviction to date.
Elroy Bonnell, a 49-year-old labourer, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #5, where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of possession of utensils used for smoking controlled drugs, namely crack cocaine.
The charge stemmed from an incident on Monday, June 9, 2025, just before midnight, when police on patrol along Freetown Road observed Bonnell acting suspiciously. According to the facts presented in court, Cpl. Stephen Peters and PC Mark Tzum stopped and searched Bonnell, during which a 2½-inch glass pipe—commonly used to smoke crack cocaine—was found in his left pants pocket.
Bonnell was promptly detained and later charged. Given his history, including eight prior drug-related convictions, he was fortunate to receive a fine instead of a custodial sentence. Magistrate Black ordered him to pay the $505 fine forthwith or face time behind bars.
Police continue to crack down on drug-related offenses in high-traffic areas like Freetown Road as part of ongoing efforts to curb street-level drug use and possession.
