‘Cousin and cousin mek dozen’ but breaking into cousin’s home and forcing her to kiss you equals three-and-a-half years in prison

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old man who forced a kiss on his cousin after breaking into her home has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for sexual assault.

Jaheem Young, who was found guilty of the offense three weeks ago, appeared before Chief Magistrate Deborah Rogers for sentencing on Tuesday. The Chief Magistrate told Young he should consider himself “lucky” that he was not charged with attempted rape, based on the facts of the case and the victim’s account.

The incident occurred in December 2024, when Young unlawfully entered the home of his cousin. According to the victim, he grabbed her and demanded a kiss. When she refused, reminding him they were cousins, Young allegedly pulled down his pants, exposed himself, and forcefully kissed her. The frightened woman screamed, and Young fled the scene.

Police later collected a substance found on the floor of the room, believed to be semen, but it was never sent for testing.

At his initial arraignment, Young pleaded guilty to burglary but not guilty to sexual assault. He was sentenced to three months for the burglary and later remanded on the sexual assault charge, for which he has now been sentenced to three and a half years.

Chief Magistrate Rogers noted the disturbing nature of the act and emphasized that Young’s behavior towards his relative was inexcusable. He now begins serving his sentence at the Belize Central Prison.
