By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man accused of setting fire to an elderly woman’s vehicle has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending a psychiatric evaluation.
Thirty-three-year-old Zackeith Flowers appeared in Court #5 last week, where the sitting Magistrate ordered that his mental state be assessed before the case proceeds. The order came after Flowers’ behavior during arraignment raised concerns that he may not have understood the court proceedings.
According to reports, a 69-year-old woman of West Street told police that around 9:13 p.m. on Tuesday, September 9, she was alerted by a neighbor that Flowers, described as mentally challenged, was setting fire to her 2002 black Ford Explorer. The neighbor managed to extinguish the flames before they spread, but the vehicle’s rear bumper sustained damages estimated at $500.
The SUV is insured with ICB until March 2026. Police investigated the matter and arrested Flowers, who was formally charged with arson.
Flowers will remain in custody at the Belize Central Prison, the only facility authorized for such evaluations under the Kolbe Foundation, until his next court appearance on November 3, 2025.
