Country Foods celebrates grand opening of new minsa factory in Spanish Lookout, Cayo

By Zoila Palma:  On December 17, 2025, Country Foods hosted a grand opening ceremony inaugurating their new minsa factory in Spanish Lookout.

Prime Minister John Briceno was the keynote speaker at the event.

The PM applauded Country Foods for making the bold decision to invest and add value to the corn that Belize produces.

With a capacity of 30 tons per day, the factory can produce enough minsa for the local market, and according to Country Foods’ Ervin Plett, they are also looking to tap into the export market.

Marketed under the ‘TAZTY’ brand, the minsa factory is expected to strengthen food security in Belize while supporting local farmers and creating new employment opportunities in Belize.

The idea for the minsa factory was conceived in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic to rising food prices, high unemployment and growing food insecurity.

Most of the equipment for the factory were imported from China and Country Foods report that the investment to date is $2.8 million.

The Ministry of Agriculture noted that the inauguration of this new minsa factory is expected to save much needed foreign exchange by reducing Belize’s dependence on imported minsa or corn flour.

In 2024 alone, Belize imported 5.23 million pounds of minsa valued at $4.36 million.

Accompanying Prime Minister Briceno at the ceremonies were Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries, Orlando Habet, Area Representative for Cayo Northeast and Minister of Sustainable Development and Climate Change, Alex Balona, Minister of State in the Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries, and Hugh O’Brien, Senior Advisor in the Ministry of Agriculture.
