By Rubén Morales Iglesias:  It was a night to forget for Belize as Costa Rica handed them their worst-ever home defeat in a devastating 7-0 loss during tonight’s Concacaf Gold Cup Qualifier at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.

The Central American powerhouse delivered a masterclass in tactical precision and finishing, dismantling the Belizean side in front of a sold-out home crowd. Alvaro Zamora capped the rout in the 88th minute with his second goal of the night, sealing an emphatic victory for Costa Rica.

The onslaught began early when Manfred Ugalde scored the opener in the 8th minute, assisted by Alonzo Martinez. Ugalde added a second goal in the 34th minute from the penalty spot. Just two minutes later, Kenneth Vargas powered home a third goal, giving Costa Rica a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime.

The second half saw no respite for Belize. Jaylen Mitchell made it 4-0 in the 65th minute, followed by a stunning backward header from Alvaro Zamora in the 70th minute for the fifth goal. Josimar Alcocer added the sixth in the 76th minute before Zamora completed the historic scoreline in the dying minutes of the match.

For Belize, the defeat was a harsh reminder of the disparity between the two sides, with Costa Rica demonstrating why they are considered one of the region’s footballing giants. Despite the unwavering support of the Belizean fans, the home team struggled to match the speed, skill, and cohesion of their opponents.

This 7-0 loss marks a low point for the Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) on home soil, and they will now face significant challenges as they try regroup for the return match on Tuesday in San Jose. Costa Rica, on the other hand, reaffirmed their status as a force to be reckoned with in Concacaf.

Critics will argue that Belize paid the price for not fielding their strongest squad in such a critical match.

Belize’s struggles were exacerbated by the absence of several key players, including Jordy Polanco, Nahjib Guerra, Charles Tillett, and Moises Hernandez, to name a few. The decision to not try to keep the players due to a dispute over stipends and game fees left the team vulnerable, and it showed on the field against a well-drilled and clinical Costa Rican side. Critics argue that Belize paid the price for not fielding their strongest squad in such a critical match.

As Belize reflects on this humbling defeat, the focus will turn to learning from this experience and working toward rebuilding confidence and competitiveness on the international stage.
