Cost of Living crunch? Businesses say customers are spending less as sales take hit!

By Zoila Palma: Across Belize, some small business owners say they are seeing a noticeable slowdown in sales, raising questions about whether the country’s businesses are experiencing a tougher economic climate as the cost of living continues to rise.

Food vendors, clothing sellers, lumber suppliers, furniture businesses and other small retailers say customers are becoming more cautious with their spending.

While businesses remain open and continue to serve customers, some entrepreneurs say the volume of sales have plummeted compared with previous periods.

Consumers are now prioritizing necessities over non-essential purchases.

Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) noted that the national inflation rate reached 4.6 percent in June 2026 compared with June 2025.

The SIB also reported that consumer confidence stood at 41.1 in June, down 0.4 percent from May.

The rising cost of transportation, food, housing and other household expenses can leave families with less disposable income for eating out, clothing, furniture, home improvements and other purchases.

For small businesses, slower sales can create a difficult cycle.

While customers are asking for lower prices and discounts, businesses are also facing higher operating costs, including transportation, supplies, utilities and imported goods. This leaves many entrepreneurs trying to maintain competitive prices while protecting their already-tight profit margins.

The question now is whether the reported drop in sales is temporary or becoming a broader trend.
