By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As the 2025 Caribbean Elite Road Cycling Championship rolls into Belize City, all eyes are on Team Belize—led by defending champion Cory Williams and rising star Derrick Chavarria—who are set to take on the region’s best this weekend.

🇧🇿 Cory Williams: The Reigning Road Race Champion

Williams returns to the Caribbean Championship as the man to beat, having captured gold in the 2024 Road Race in Georgetown, Guyana. His victory came in a thrilling ten-man sprint, clocking 3:46:07 over 155 kilometers (96.875 miles). He also earned bronze in the Individual Time Trial (ITT), completing the 36-kilometer (22.5-mile) course in 43:08.22. With podium finishes in both events, Williams cemented his status as one of the Caribbean’s elite cyclists.

🇧🇿 Derrick Chavarria: Silver Medalist and World Championship Contender

Chavarria, who finished sixth overall and second in the Under-23 category in Guyana, claimed silver in the 2024 Caribbean U23 Road Race. His performance, matching the winning time of Williams, shows his tactical strength and endurance. Chavarria recently represented Belize at the World Championships in Rwanda alongside teammate Jyven Gonzalez, gaining valuable international experience ahead of this weekend’s championship.
