By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) announced that Gregorio Esquivel has been selected as the 2025 Farmer of the Year, recognizing his dedication to sustainable farming and innovative agricultural practices.
With decades of experience in the industry, Esquivel’s commitment to responsible stewardship of the land has set him apart as a leader among Belizean farmers, MAFSE said in a statement.
A native of Consejo Village in the Corozal District, the 44-year-old Esquivel has spent over 30 years refining his farming techniques.
“Mr Esquivel currently farms on 67 acres of land, of which 30 acres are developed for mixed farming, which includes crops, livestock, and apiculture,” MAFSE said.
He cultivates a wide range of produce, including watermelon, various vegetables, and fruit trees such as plantains, limes, grapefruits, tangerines, pineapples, papayas, and coconuts. His careful attention to crop rotation, fertilization, irrigation, and harvest timing ensures high-quality yields year after year.
“Mr. Esquivel maximizes strategic use of available resources at the farm, especially water, and ensures he uses minimal pesticides and good agricultural practices to contribute to positive stewardship of the environment,” noted a MAFSE official.
Beyond crops, Esquivel manages a thriving livestock operation with 38 beef cattle—including Brangus and Brahman breeds—on 25 acres of mechanized land, practicing rotational grazing to maintain soil health. Additionally, he keeps an apiary with 20 bee colonies, producing honey for the local market. His adaptability and forward-thinking approach to climate-smart agriculture make him a model for farmers across Belize.
In addition to Esquivel’s prestigious recognition, MAFSE has also honoured Noemi Requena as the Woman Farmer of the Year, celebrating her pioneering work in regenerative agriculture, and Juan Ricardo Carrillo as the Junior Farmer of the Year, acknowledging his dedication to shaping the future of farming.
This year’s winners exemplify excellence in agriculture, demonstrating how sustainable practices and innovative techniques can strengthen Belize’s agricultural sector for generations to come.
