By Zoila Palma: The People’s United Party (PUP) hosted its National Party Council meeting over the weekend in Dangriga.
During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde addressed PUP area representatives and supporters reminding them of the party’s pledge to “serve the people.”
Hyde urged the PUP to not take anything for granted and to remain focused.
“We can’t take things for granted because it’s easy to get carried away you know? When PUP loses it’s nobody that beat us, we beat ourselves. We got carried away. We started “kicksi” ourselves. It’s us that started to make mistakes. It’s us that started to get carried away and stared to quarrel with one another and want to fight with one another and want to tear each other apart. We get caught up. We get carried away,” Hyde said.
Hyde expressed confidence in the PUP and indicated that some Area Representatives including the Prime Minister, Julius Espat, Henry Charles, Francis Fonseca and Oscar Requena will win their constituency seats.
But, the PUP party itself needs to be strong for the PUP to win another term.
“There’s a handful of people that are going to win no matter what. But the vast majority of our area representatives and standard bearers need the party to be strong. Need the party,” Hyde explained.
Hyde also reminded the PUP that in 2008, only 6 PUP Area representatives won and at that time, PUP supporters suffered with people losing their jobs, land being taken away and lack of access to healthcare during the then UDP administration.
