By Aaron Humes: According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources Cordel Hyde, his office has been working hard to provide land to as many Belizeans as possible in the shortest possible time.
“In a storm, a ship needs a good anchor. We think a piece of land is that, a good anchor and we have been pushing anchors like never before,” Hyde told the House of Representatives during his Budget presentation.
The Government has approved 19,931 purchase prices in the last two years up to Friday, March 20, the “vast majority” for first-time land owners. In 2025, he added, over 10 thousand land titles were delivered; 4,905 land certificates and 5,353 Minister’s Fiat Grants, while over 8,300 lots were surveyed and $3 million is available to do more this year – but there is no rest.
Hyde committed to redesigning the Ministry’s website to make it more user-friendly and establishing a WhatsApp hotline to more quickly address land issues through Belmopan or the district land offices, because he can’t see everybody personally as much as he would like to.
The Government has been helping to convert squatters to land owners countrywide without condoning the practice, from the original ‘Gungulung’ in Lake Independence to what he called “Baby Gungulung” in Bella Vista, not to mention areas in Dangriga, Ladyville, and elsewhere – though he warned those in the Mountain Pine Ridge area that they can’t get 25 acres for farming in reference to the ongoing issue in that area that has recently been making news.
In the area of legislation and policy, a National Land Use Plan will be developed from the existing policy and a bill regulating real estate is headed to public compensation.
