By Aaron Humes: The Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU); Public Service Union (PSU); and Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM) have been irked, to say the least, by a series of television advertisements they have dubbed “character assassination” and suspected to be the work of associates of the Government of Belize.

Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde, the GOB’s lead negotiator, attempted to distance the Government from those advertisements. When asked whether they amounted to union-busting, Hyde responded: “I said to the folks that a lot has been said on both sides, but we don’t support that kind of stuff – we really don’t support that kind of stuff. Our engagements are not about that kind of engagement; we are about getting results, about talking constructively, about respecting each other, about being serious about the issues, because the issues [with which] people are grappling are real. And we don’t get into personality stuff, we really can’t; because this country is too small, the demands are too great, our time is limited, we’re not going to be here forever, and so we have to maximize and get as much done and work as hard as we can, for as long as we can.”

And while that has been made clear to the unions, what about the threat of increased taxes to pay for the higher salaries and restoration of increments? Hyde said it’s his job to try and reach an agreement one way or another and he is hoping that today is the start of that.
