Cop’s son considers plea deal in attempted murder case for allegedly stabbing relatives

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Dwayne Sutherland Jr., the son of a police officer, is contemplating a plea deal with the Crown after being accused of stabbing two of his relatives during a violent family dispute in Lemonal Village in October 2023.

Sutherland Jr., who initially chose to represent himself in court, appeared before Justice Nigel Pilgrim in the High Court this week and expressed interest in pleading guilty to a lesser charge. He also asked the judge for a sentencing indication.

In response, Justice Pilgrim cautioned Sutherland about the risks of self-representation and appointed Attorney Sheriegne Rodriguez to assist him. Rodriguez agreed to take on the case, and the court proceedings were adjourned to allow time for further discussions about a possible plea bargain.

Under Belize’s updated plea agreement laws, defendants can negotiate a guilty plea to a lesser charge in exchange for a lighter sentence—an option Sutherland is now considering.

The charges stem from a violent altercation following a cricket match in Lemonal on August 22, 2023. During the incident, A police corporal witnessed Sutherland allegedly stabbing a 64-year-old man and another 62-year-old with a knife. The officer fired two warning shots in the air before detaining Sutherland at the scene.

Both victims suffered stab wounds to the abdomen and were rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital by private vehicle.

At the time of his arraignment in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, Sutherland faced two counts of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, threatening behavior, and wounding. He was initially denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison but was later released on High Court bail. However, he is currently back in custody on an unrelated matter.

A three-inch knife believed to be the weapon used was recovered at the scene by police.
