Copa América 2024: 10-man Colombia beat Uruguay 1-0, advance to Final against Argentina

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a semifinal match that ended in a brawl on the pitch and in the stands, Colombia qualified to the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 Final on a 1-0 win over Uruguay despite playing an entire half with only ten men.

Daniel Muñoz was red carded at the end of the first half after receiving a second yellow card leaving Colombia but with only ten men. Fortunately for Colombia, by then they were leading 1-0 after Jefferson Lerma’s header put them ahead.

In the second half, Colombia closed their ranks and fended off all of Uruguay’s attacks.

Uruguay’s Darwin Núnez missed at least four breaks in the first half and Luis Suárez hit the woodwork in the second half.

Despite their defensive stance, Colombia created a couple of fast breaks in the second half that came close to scoring.

After seven minutes of added time, Colombia were able to celebrate their 1-0 victory that sends them to the Final against Argentina on Sunday.

Uruguay will play Canada for third place on Saturday.

But not everything was celebration. At the end of the match, a pushing and shoving encounter among players from both teams on the pitch ended with fans going at each other in the stands. A number of Uruguay players, including Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez and Atlético Madrid’s José María Giménez, joined the brawl in the stands to defend family members who they say were being attacked by the Colombian fans.

CONMEBOL has started an investigation into what provoked the players’ participation in the brawl.
