Cop taken off active duty and charged for allegedly stealing $150

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 26-year-old police officer is out on bail after being arraigned on Monday on a charge of theft.

Mark Marcello Lopez, of Belize City and originally from Hopkins, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 to answer to allegations that he stole $150 in cash on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. Lopez, who has been placed on interdiction following the criminal charge, pleaded not guilty.

With no objection from the prosecution, the Senior Magistrate granted Lopez bail in the sum of $800 plus one surety of the same amount. Several conditions were attached: Lopez must not contact the virtual complainant or any members of his family, must not interfere with prosecution witnesses, and must stay at least 100 yards away from Pitts and his establishment. He is also required to report to the Mahogany Street Police Substation every Friday, beginning November 28, 2025, between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Police have not released additional details regarding the alleged theft, and officers remain tight-lipped on the matter. Lopez is due back in court on January 12, 2026.
