By Aaron Humes: A police officer accused of assaulting retired athlete and student Shaun Gill following a date with his ex, a fellow police officer, then allegedly threatening him again at the police station, has pleaded not guilty in court.
Lewis Pascasio is on remand at the Belize Central Prison, pending his bail application which is expected to be as early as this Friday, October 4.
Pascasio tried to dodge media cameras at the Magistrate’s Court where he was joined by attorney Emerita Anderson, pleading not guilty to aggravated assault with a firearm before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola.
But a separate charge of using threatening words was withdrawn by the court prosecutor as it was found not to be properly before the court. According to Gill, while at the police station, Pascasio had supposedly told him, “If yuh mek wah report against me, that will be the last report you will ever make.”
Due to the nature of the offence, bail was denied and Pascasio was remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until November 30.
Gill told police that he was accompanying a female police officer on Thursday night when they left a restaurant on Princess Margaret Drive. He noticed that a black Dodge Charger car started to follow them on Freetown Road up to Cemetery Road by Rene’s Store, where the vehicle overtook him and blocked his way.
According to Gill, the driver of the Charger was a tall, slim brown-skinned male who exited his vehicle holding a black object resembling a nine-millimeter Glock pistol, who he said cranked the gun and walked towards him.
Gill remained seated in the driver’s seat and the assailant approached his side of the vehicle and said, “Who the f*** you? Who the f*** you,” while punching him in his face several times. Gill tried to exit the vehicle to defend himself but he was hit on his left ear causing pain and bleeding. He begged the assailant not to shoot him and a passerby who was a police officer stopped and intervened, telling the assailant to put away the gun and trying to take it away from him. They began scuffling and the assailant ran off toward Queen Street.
Gill proceeded to Queen Street Police Station to report the matter, but as it took place in Precinct 1, he was redirected to King Street Police Station where he met with his assailant again. According to Gill, while sitting down inside the King Street Police Station, he told a female police officer that he came to make a report about a Police Officer who struck him across his head with a firearm. He recognized the assailant coming out of an office at the Station where he allegedly approached him and threatened him.
