By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police Constable Lionel Rodolfo Urbina, who is on interdiction and remanded on charges stemming from the 2025 stabbing death of 19-year-old Kevin Matthew Depaz on Caye Caulker, returned to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Urbina was brought from the Belize Central Prison under a special security escort and appeared unrepresented in Court #3, where he was provided with 145 pages of disclosure, including seven DVDs containing evidence in the case.
The matter was adjourned to October 21, 2026, when Urbina is expected to appear in the San Pedro Magistrate’s Court for the commencement of his preliminary inquiry. He was further remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
Urbina was arraigned on January 22, 2026, on one count of murder in connection with Depaz’s death, as well as two counts of attempted murder and two counts of use of deadly means of harm in relation to injuries allegedly inflicted on Neesean Allen and Julian Canul. Reports identified Urbina as a 20-year-old police constable when he was charged.
The charges arose from a violent altercation on Caye Caulker during the early morning hours of June 30, 2025. Depaz, Allen and Canul became involved in a confrontation with off-duty Police Constables Urbina and Darneak Swasey after an earlier incident near Munchies Fast Food on Luciano Reyes Street. Depaz suffered a stab wound to the abdomen and later died at the Caye Caulker Health Centre, while several others involved in the confrontation were injured.
Following an investigation and directives from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Urbina was charged in January. Swasey was not charged with Depaz’s murder.
Urbina remains on remand awaiting the preliminary inquiry.
