The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) confirms that a solid waste spill caused by a traffic incident on Wednesday May 13, 2026, on the George Price Highway, was successfully cleared following an extensive, coordinated emergency response involving multiple agencies and private sector partners.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. and marks only the second public road roll and spill involving BSWaMA’s thirteen (13) year Solid Waste Management operations history and involved no recorded major injury. Upon notification of the accident, the BSWaMA immediately mobilized its team and ensured the coordination and deployment of significant resources to secure the area, recover the spilled waste and equipment, and restore safe access to the highway.
Cleanup efforts continued throughout the evening, and into the early morning hours, concluding at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2026. In total, the operation required the coordinated use of one loader, one excavator, one backup trailer, five tractor trailers, four support vehicles, and a team of 20 dedicated personnel working tirelessly to remove the waste and clean the affected area.
BSWaMA’s response was supported by Lopez Equipment Company Ltd, the Department of the Environment, the Belize Police Department, the Department of Transport’s Highway Patrol, and other key stakeholders whose swift assistance was instrumental in ensuring the successful completion of the operation.
Due to the scale of the incident, temporary traffic disruptions were unavoidable, and in some instances motorists experienced delays exceeding one hour. The Authority extends its sincere appreciation to the public for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during the extended roadway closure.
The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority remains committed to safeguarding public health and the environment and to responding promptly and effectively to incidents affecting Belize’s solid waste management infrastructure.
