By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old cook, Shantel Erlene Flowers, has been convicted of a serious cybercrime offense after admitting to posting false and defamatory statements about a police officer on Facebook—an act that could have landed her five years in prison.
Flowers, a Belize City resident, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Dennison Mannon in Court #8, where she pleaded guilty to a charge of using a computer system to disseminate a false statement with intent to subject a person to public ridicule, contempt, hatred, or embarrassment.
The charge stems from a Facebook post made on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, under the profile name “Shan Tel FlowerB.” The post included photos of an officer, captioned with remarks implying that he was intoxicated:
“You wah come in my spot look how high he. You could see it clearly, he high bro… Today you ah feel fi f** with me, drunking police.”*
After pleading guilty, Flowers attempted to justify her actions, telling the court that the officer had allegedly punched her during a prior encounter, which led her to make the post out of frustration. However, Magistrate Mannon reminded her that the officer was not on trial, and the matter before the court was about her own actions.
Magistrate Mannon acknowledged that Flowers was a first-time offender, and although she saved the court time by pleading guilty, he noted she lacked remorse. As such, instead of imposing the maximum $10,000 fine or five-year sentence, he calculated her penalty starting at $6,000, then applied deductions for her guilty plea and lack of prior convictions—reducing it to a final fine of $3,000 plus $5 in court costs.
Flowers has until December 31, 2025, to pay the fine or face one year of imprisonment.
