By Aaron Humes: In the latest recent monthly report released by the Statistical Institute of Belize, consumer prices have shown a noticeable increase of 1.2 percent year over year, signaling growing inflation pressures on Belizean households.
The primary drivers of this inflationary trend are significant increases in the costs of food, home rental, and utilities like liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), while transportation costs dipped.
In the ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ category, prices surged by 2 percent compared to the same month last year. A notable contributor to this rise was a staggering 7.8 percent increase in the price of non-alcoholic beverages. Within this subcategory, purified water saw a 10.7 percent price hike, followed closely by soft drinks and fruit and vegetable juices, which rose by 7.7 percent and 11.7 percent respectively.
The ‘Food’ portion of the index also recorded an upward trend, with prices for key staples experiencing a rise of 1.1 percent. Among the notable increases were cereals and bakery products, which jumped by 1.7 percent, along with a 3 percent rise in the prices of fresh meats, encompassing pork, beef, and poultry.
In contrast, the ‘Transport’ category experienced a decline, providing some relief to consumers amidst the rising costs of essential goods and services. The ‘Information and Communication’ sector similarly saw reductions, indicating a mixed economic picture for households navigating the landscape of fluctuating prices.
