By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) reported a 3.8% increase in the national inflation rate for July 2024.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month climbed to 118.9, up from 114.6 in July 2023.
This rise reflects higher costs across most major categories, with notable increases in food, restaurant services, home rental costs, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
The ‘Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ and ‘Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels’ categories were the primary contributors to the inflation surge.
The only category to see a price decrease was ‘Information and Communication.’
The inflation rate for ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ stood at 5.7 percent, almost all of which could be attributed to higher food costs.
