By Zoila Palma: Consumer prices in Belize saw a 2.6% year-over-year increase in December 2024, according to the latest report from the Statistical Institute of Belize.
The All-Items Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks the overall cost of goods and services, rose to 120.0 in December, up from 117.0 in the same month of 2023.
This was due to higher food prices and rising home rental costs, which have been consistent drivers throughout the year. However, some categories saw price reductions, including fuel and information and communication equipment.
The category of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages experienced a 5% increase in December. This sector contributed significantly to the overall price hike, with food items rising by 4.5%.
Key items such as fresh vegetables and pulses—including cabbages, broccoli, black beans, and red kidney beans—saw price jumps of up to 10.5%.
Fruits, including limes, oranges, watermelons, and grapes, spiked by 20.6%. Cereal products like breads and tortillas were up by 3%, while fresh meats saw a moderate rise of 2.1%.
The Non-Alcoholic Beverages category saw a notable 7.8% rise, primarily due to higher prices for fruit and vegetable juices (up 14.8%), bottled water (up 8.9%), and soft drinks (up 7.2%).
Despite these increases, lower prices for fuel and certain technology items was noticed.
