By Zoila Palma: Consumer confidence in Belize dipped slightly in May 2025, with the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) falling to 47.5, down from 47.7 in April, according to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
The modest 0.5% month-over-month decline reflects continued caution among consumers about the state of the economy and their personal financial situations.
This marks a continuation of the gradual downward trend in consumer sentiment observed since the beginning of the year.
The CCI, which ranges from 0 (completely pessimistic) to 100 (completely optimistic), indicates overall consumer pessimism when it falls below 50. In May, consumer perceptions weakened in two key areas:
- Current economic conditions and household finances compared to one year ago
- Expectations for the economy and household finances in the next 12 months
However, the index component related to major purchases of durable goods — such as vehicles, appliances, and furniture — showed a slight improvement, suggesting a cautious willingness among some consumers to spend on big-ticket items.
The CCI serves as an early indicator of future household spending, saving, and investment behavior, which are critical drivers of Belize’s overall economic growth.
