By Zoila Palma: Consumer confidence in Belize edged lower in June 2026, with the national Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) falling marginally by 0.4 percent to 41.1, down from 41.3 in May, according to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB). The decline continues a downward trend seen in recent months, although at a slower pace than the sharper decreases recorded earlier in the year.
The SIB said the decline was mainly driven by weaker sentiment toward major household purchases and current economic conditions. The Durable Goods component fell by 8.5 percent, from 37.6 to 34.4, indicating increased pessimism about purchasing items such as homes, vehicles, furniture and appliances. The Present component also declined by 0.9 percent, from 37.9 to 37.6, as consumers became slightly more pessimistic about current economic conditions and their household finances.
However, consumers were more optimistic about the year ahead. The Expectations component rose by 6.4 percent, moving from a pessimistic 48.3 in May to an optimistic 51.4 in June, reflecting improved views of future economic conditions and household finances. By district, Orange Walk recorded the largest decline in confidence, falling 8.9 percent to 36.0, while Cayo saw the biggest improvement, with confidence rising 6.5 percent from 38.5 to 41.0.
The CCI, which ranges from zero to 100, measures consumer sentiment about the economy, household finances and major purchases, with a score above 50 generally indicating optimism. The index is considered an early indicator of future household spending, saving and investment, and therefore can provide insight into potential economic growth.
