By Breaking Belize News Staff: A construction worker from the Holy Emmanuel Street area in Belize City has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being denied bail for an aggravated assault charge involving a vehicle. The accused, 39-year-old Jose Cecilio Colindres Garcia, is facing allegations of using his vehicle to assault a sales clerk while she was jogging in the Belama Phase 4 area.

Garcia appeared unrepresented this morning in Magistrate’s Court #7, where he was read the single charge of aggravated assault. The jogger reported that on the evening of the incident, while jogging, she noticed a dark blue vehicle following her. The driver, later identified as Garcia, repeatedly asked if she needed help. When she ignored him and tried to escape, Garcia allegedly attempted to run her down with his vehicle, forcing her to jump into a culvert to avoid being hit. She sustained an injury to her foot in the process.

The woman captured parts of the encounter on her cellphone, despite Garcia’s protests. At his arraignment, Garcia denied the allegations, claiming he was in the area to collect money for his boss and did not recall seeing any woman. He admitted to drinking earlier that evening but insisted he never spoke to or tried to harm anyone.

Due to the serious nature of the accusations and the evidence provided by the police, the magistrate denied Garcia bail. He is set to return to court on December 18, 2024.
