Concacaf Nations League C: Anguilla shocked by Turks & Caicos Islands 2-1, out of qualifying picture

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Anguilla, the second-place team in the Concacaf League C triangular tournament being held in Belize, were stunned by Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) 2-1 on Saturday night at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan, losing all hopes of gaining promotion to League B and a possible shot at the Gold Cup qualifiers.

TCI came out spanking with Emmanuel Martin scoring the opening goal in the third minute. Anguilla fought back and levelled in the 59^th minute through Lamar Carpenter. However, Ledson Jerome blasted the game winner from the penalty spot in stoppage time in the 90’+5.

After their 2-0 win over TCI in September, Anguilla were favoured on Saturday. Though a victory wouldn’t have been an express ticket to League B, they stood a great chance as the best second-place team, considering the other two second-place teams, Bahamas (four points) and Cayman Islands (six points), would be facing the group leaders on Tuesday. It was more likely that Anguilla, had they beaten Turks and Caicos Islands, would be able to stay ahead of either Bahamas or Cayman Islands. However, the loss to TCI knocked the wind out of them.

Now, the Cayman Islands are in the driver’s seat for that spot when they meet St. Kitts and Nevis on Tuesday. However, the Bahamas can still get in should they win over Barbados and Cayman Islands fail to beat St. Kitts & Nevis.

Turks and Caicos Islands can still reach six points if they beat Belize at 8:00 pm on Tuesday at the FFB Stadium, but even if Cayman Islands and Bahamas lose, their goal differential (-5) doesn’t help TCI. However, a draw against Belize would get Turks and Caicos out of last place in Group C, and leave Anguilla with the unwanted honours.
