By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In Group A action on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at AT&T Stadium, both Mexico and Costa Rica secured their places in the quarterfinals with hard-fought victories.
In the evening’s second match, Mexico earned a 2–0 win over Suriname, thanks to a commanding second-half performance. César Montes broke the deadlock in the 57th minute with a powerful header from an Alexis Vega corner. Just six minutes later, Montes struck again — this time with a right-footed finish following another set-piece opportunity. Edson Álvarez nearly added a third in stoppage time, but his header was denied by Suriname goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen, who tallied four saves on the night.
Earlier in the day, Costa Rica edged the Dominican Republic 2–1 in a match that saw the Caribbean side take a historic early lead. João Urbáez pounced on a rebound in the 16th minute to give the Dominican Republic their first-ever lead in Gold Cup play. But Costa Rica responded with composure: Manfred Ugalde converted a penalty in the 44th minute to level the score, and Josimar Alcócer sealed the win in the 85th, finishing a well-placed through ball from Ugalde.
With two wins apiece, both Mexico and Costa Rica are now through to the knockout stage, setting up a high-stakes clash between them on Sunday to decide the group winner.
