By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In front of a roaring crowd of nearly 71,000 at Levi’s Stadium, in Santa Clara, California, Mexico edged Honduras 1-0 in a tense Concacaf Gold Cup semifinal, booking their place in Sunday’s final against the United States.

The match’s lone goal came in the 50th minute, when veteran striker Raúl Jiménez calmly slotted home a right-footed finish from the center of the box. The goal was set up by a brilliant assist from 16-year-old Gilberto Mora, who became the youngest player to record an assist in the tournament since at least 2013.

Despite Honduras’s physical approach and a flurry of yellow cards—five in total—Mexico maintained composure and control, dominating possession with 63% and limiting Honduras to just one shot on target. Goalkeeper Luis Malagón earned his fourth clean sheet of the tournament, extending El Tri’s shutout streak to 383 minutes.

Mexico nearly doubled their lead when Edson Álvarez found the net, but the goal was ruled offside after VAR review. Honduras pushed forward in the final minutes, but Mexico’s defense, led by César Montes and Johan Vásquez, held firm.

Earlier in the evening, the United States defeated Guatemala 2-1 in St. Louis to secure their spot in the final. Diego Luna was the star of the show, scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes to give the USMNT a commanding lead. Guatemala responded with a late goal from Olger Escobar, but a crucial stoppage-time save by Matt Freese preserved the American victory.

With this win, Mexico advances to their 12th Gold Cup final, aiming for a record-extending 10th title.

With both regional giants advancing, the stage is now set for a classic USA vs. Mexico showdown on Sunday, July 6, at NRG Stadium in Houston—the eighth Gold Cup final meeting between the two sides, and a rematch of the 2023 edition.
