By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United States made a powerful statement in their Gold Cup 2025 opener, crushing Trinidad & Tobago 5-0 at PayPal Park in San Jose, California on Sunday, June 15, 2025.
Malik Tillman led the charge with a brace in the 16th and 41st minutes, followed by goals from Patrick Agyemang (44′), Brenden Aaronson (82′), and Haji Wright (84′). The hosts, considered one of the tournament favourites, left no room for their opponents to respond.
Meanwhile, Mexico had a tougher battle in the tournament opener but managed to secure a 3-2 victory over the Dominican Republic at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. Edson Álvarez (44′), Raúl Jiménez (47′), and César Montes (53′) put Mexico ahead, but the Dominican Republic fought back with goals from Peter González (51′) and Edison Azcona (67′), making it a tight contest.
In other matches, Costa Rica edged Suriname 4-3, with Alonso Martínez (13′), Manfred Ugalde (18′, 90′ pen), and Josimar Alcocer (76′) finding the net for Costa Rica, while Suriname responded through Gyrano Kerk (33′), Richonell Margaret (58′), and Shaquille Pinas (64′ pen).
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia secured a narrow 1-0 win over Haiti, courtesy of Saleh Al-Shehri’s penalty in the 21st minute.
