By Zoila Palma: During Wednesday’s protest by the UDP in Belize City, UDP stalwart Brian “Yellowman” Audinette was detained by police.
Reports indicate that Audinette was detained due to a text message sent within a UDP chat group mentioning intentions to “bruk up SSB.”
Commissioner of Police Richard Rosado says that Audinette was not charged and he was detained after police received concern calls from UDP members about his text message.
“The detention of Mr. Audinette was a lawful action initiated to facilitate a police investigation into credible allegations. These allegations concerned statements attributed to Mr. Audinette which suggested a specific intent to cause damage to the Social Security Board building during an upcoming UDP demonstration,” COMPOL Rosado said.
“It is further noted that the information prompting this investigation originated from within Mr. Audinette’s own organization. Multiple UDP members voluntarily contacted the Police Department to express concerns that his alleged statements created a risk of violence, undermining their planned lawful and peaceful protest. They sought to disavow any actions that could expose participants to harm or legal jeopardy,” COMPOL added.
The Commissioner of Police further said that it is “never an interest on the Department part to stifle democracy. We support the right to protest, so long as it’s done in the confines of the law.”
