By Zoila Palma: In a vital effort to promote safety and save lives, the Belize Police Department’s Community Policing Unit has teamed up with the Belize Coast Guard to offer life-saving swim training to nearly 50 young people from the Belize and Cayo Districts.
The program, which began this week and will continue over the next two weeks, targets children during their school break—when many are drawn to rivers, lagoons, and the sea without knowing how to swim.
The initiative is designed to address a pressing concern: the high risk of drowning among children who lack basic swimming skills.
By providing structured training, the program not only equips youth with essential water safety knowledge but also builds their confidence and self-reliance.
