By Giselle O’Brien:
On June 27th, 2025, the Community Archaeology shared the following Press Release:

As Belizeans we should submerge ourselves in the learning and understand that archaeology is there for us and that we can do it.”
– Hector Maldonado, Community Archaeology participant.

Central Farm, Cayo – Community Archaeology Belize 2025 is currently in progress, offering young Belizean participants a unique opportunity to excavate an ancient Maya structure. As they work to uncover who once lived there, when the site was occupied, and what kinds of items were used. They’re not just uncovering history – they’re also discovering more about themselves in the process.

Community Archaeology Belize emerged from the PhD research of Belizean archaeologist, Antonio Beardall, and is dedicated to actively involving young Belizeans in the archaeological process. From excavating sites to analyzing unearthed artifacts and engaging in on-site discussions, participants gain hands-on experience while exploring Belize’s ancient past. Beyond generating archaeological knowledge, the project seeks to understand how young Belizeans connect with this history. Do they see archaeology as part of their national heritage? Do these ancient sites and artifacts contribute to their sense of cultural identity? This pioneering initiative aspires to serve as a model for future projects across Belize – emphasizing the importance of youth inclusion and promoting broader representation in the ongoing narrative of the nation’s history.

I am happy to see the difference that Community Archaeology is making. Belizeans have always been involved in archaeology in Belize but have not necessarily been recognized for it. Community Archaeology is intentional, inclusive and collaborative. We are happy to be a part of this historical shift for an archaeology for Belizeans by Belizeans.” – Karla Pinelo, SISE House of Culture, NICH.

Participants like Hector Maldonado say, “For the past two weeks my initial thoughts of archaeology have been replaced by actual practical knowledge of what archaeology is in Belize and how much Belizean people should care about it – getting to the site and learning day by day the process that excavating takes, makes me realize that we are made for this.

Community Archaeology continues for another week at this site and from July 7th to 25th in Benque Viejo del Carmen. We encourage youth to sign up by contacting Antonio Beardall at 601-1262 or through the SISE House of Culture and the Benque House of Culture.”

– END-

This initiative is partnered with Texas State University, Belize Valley Archaeological Reconnaissance Project, the Institute of Archaeology, Belize Culture Fund, and the National Institute of Culture and History’s Museum of Belize and Houses of Culture.
