By Zoila Palma: The Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) is marking its 30th anniversary on Commonwealth Day, March 10, 2025.
Established in 1995, CLGF brings together cities, local governments, and related organizations to promote local democracy and effective service delivery across the Commonwealth.
This year’s theme, “Together We Thrive,” highlights the diverse work of local governments in areas such as waste management, water provision, housing, and healthcare.
Throughout 2025, CLGF will celebrate its achievements, including major milestones, impactful projects, and the role of women in local government.
The anniversary will be marked by case studies, commemorative publications, and events, culminating in a special session at the Commonwealth Local Government Conference.
CLGF, founded with the endorsement of Commonwealth Heads of Government, advocates for local democracy and works closely with partners like the Commonwealth Secretariat. Its initiatives focus on advocacy, networking, research, and sharing expertise, impacting regions worldwide with programs on local economic development and resilience to challenges like urbanization and climate change.
Secretary-General Lucy Slack and Chairperson Bernard Wagner emphasized CLGF’s continued relevance and commitment to ensuring local governments play a key role in global policymaking, reflecting on both the past achievements and future opportunities for local governments across the Commonwealth.
