Commissioner of Police suggests extension of State of Emergency in Southside and Cayo following Charles James murder

By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has told reporters that it appears some haven’t gotten the message about the ongoing State of Emergency in most of Southside Belize City as well as parts of Roaring Creek and Camalote.

The murder of Coastguardsman Charles James Wednesday night was the fifth since the regulation was introduced on March 27, and the second in an area directly covered by it.

The St Martin’s area is largely run by the so-called Peace in the Valley (PIV) gang which had not been as heavily targeted as others – but the ComPol says that will change as it appears they were behind Wednesday night’s killing.

The suspected gunman is hospitalized and police are looking for a second as well as rounding up other troublemakers, but the Commissioner said more time is needed.

He refuted suggestions on social media that the suspected gunman was only a bystander and denied immediate medical attention. He stated that while police are only obligated to transport dead persons to hospital, officers took it upon themselves to take the suspect, who had just engaged in gunfire with them, to hospital after the ambulance was delayed. Police are sure this man committed the killing and engaged police due to blood and other evidence from the scene.

Mediation is also continuing in the River Valley area which has been a recent flashpoint.
